Rossland kids learn what keeps the City going

Rossland’s Public Works department put on an entertaining and educational day for Grade Four classes in Rossland on Thursday, June 15, and the kids loved it.  They had an opportunity to suggest names for the snowplow pictured above; they got to play with a heavy-duty leaf (and whatever else gets in its way) blower, and had fun blowing each other’s hats off; they learned about how the landscaping around town is planted and cared for.

Shared learning about Indigenous peoples and shared understanding about the legacy of colonialism is the focus of the 94 Days of Education & Action initiative that launched on June 29.

Building towards the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation that takes place on September 30, Selkirk College is taking the regional lead on recognizing the impacts of the residential school system.

Bat Pups on the move during summer

You are not alone!

Mid-summer is the time when landowners typically notice more bat activity, may have bats flying into their house, and occasionally find a bat on the ground or roosting in unusual locations.

These surprise visitors are often the young pups.

RCMP officers out on patrols on Christina Lake

The RCMP summer boat patrol program at Christina Lake is different then previous years, but still proving to be effective and popular.

Grant Forks RCMP said that in the past, the local detachment was able to secure a Reserve Constable for the summer and have them work about 4 shifts a week, cruising around the lake and in the community.

This year, with resources being stretched thin and many of the Reserve Constables filling gaps at detachments with staffing shortages or supporting detachments with wildfire issues, no Reserve Constable was available.

Laughter, lively activities and moments of individual thought. At the 2023 Basin Youth Network Leadership Summit, these happened in abundance. The goal: to help youth absorb valuable life skills, plus express how they see the future of this region.

Ninety youth from around the Basin attended the event, which took place in Kimberley in May 2023 and was delivered by the Trust’s Basin Youth Network. But why the focus on leadership?
